it is my great pleasure to announce the publication of the first edition of the journal of craniomaxillofacial research and i would therefore like to take this opportunity to point out a brief history of the field ofmaxillofacial surgery and also the craniomaxillofacial research center in iran. the discipline of oral and maxillofacial surgery was initially formed and taught under the name of oral surgery in the tehran university which was later renamed to tehran university of medical sciences (1958). the curriculum for residency of oral and maxillofacial surgery was officially introduced by dr. ismail yazdi and dr. abolhasan mesgarzadeh in the year 1975 for the first time in the university of tehran, later expanded to other universities of iran. university of tehran, currently holding two main hospitals of shariati and sina, accounts for the biggest center for cranio-maxillofacial studies in the country. parallel to the development of educational and therapeutic aspects of this disciple, special attention was drawn to its research-orientated structure hence in conjunction with the establishment of the research centers in the university of tehran. the craniomaxillofacial research center was founded in the year 2009 within the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. it further contributed to the release of the journal of craniomaxillofacial research. accounting as the first journal of its type in the western asia, the journal comprises all epidemiological, basic science and clinically related studies in cranio-maxillofacial field and related disciplines. the aim of this journal is therefore the promotion of education, knowledge and practice of colleagues participating in these areas, with a multidisciplinary approach. the seasonal journal of craniomaxillofacial research is open access and published 4 times a year. we would be delighted to receive colleagues’ papers and studies for publishing in our journal. i am honored to have distinguished professors and colleagues from different universities world-wide, accept my invitation for participation in the editorial board. i would like to thank my colleague, dr mohammad bayat, the founder of the craniomaxillofacial research center, for his sincere contribution and dedication. special thanks to our dedicated colleague, dr amir j. abbasi, for his support and administrative role. none of these could have been possible without this sincere corporations. we humbly thank you all in advance for all your comments and submitted papers and hope that this journal could be able to contribute to the better scientific connection between different fields of cranio-maxillofacial studies and those practicing it throughout the world.
